It depends on the event. Casual outdoor chess at Washington Square Park, Bryant Park Activity Station, and Central Park Chess House is always drop-in — no registration needed. The Chess.com NYC Saturday Meetup is also free and drop-in. Club lectures, simuls, summer camps, and rated tournaments typically require registration in advance. Always check the organiser's website before attending.

Many are. Casual park chess at Washington Square Park, Bryant Park (equipment loan), and Central Park is free. The Chess.com NYC Saturday Meetup at Pier 57 is free. Marshall Club lectures are typically free or low-cost. Bryant Park summer tournaments require a USCF membership and entry fee ($59–85).

Most lectures and simuls at the Marshall are open to non-members. Some tournaments are members-only. Check the specific event listing on marshallchessclub.org before attending. Membership and day passes can usually be arranged at the club.

Bryant Park Activity Station (free equipment, calm atmosphere, April–October) and the Chess.com NYC Saturday Meetup at Pier 57 (free, all levels, welcoming) are the best starting points. Chess Forum at 219 Thompson St is also excellent — a relaxed parlor where you can play for $5/hr with equipment provided.

The Marshall Chess Club calendar (marshallchessclub.org/calendar) is the most reliable source. Also check the Chess.com NYC Meetup group on meetup.com, Bryant Park's activity calendar for summer events, and Little House of Chess for scholastic programs.
